What to Do With Unwanted Airdrops on Solana
Not every airdrop is a gift. On Solana, anyone can send tokens or NFTs to your address. Some drops are legitimate; many are spam designed to phish you. Managing them well protects both security and the SOL locked in token accounts.
Good airdrops vs bait
Possibly useful: tokens from protocols you used, with documentation on official sites you already trust.
Treat as hostile until proven otherwise: surprise tokens with “claim,” “support,” or login URLs in the name or image.
If you did not opt in and you do not recognize the project, assume bait.
What not to do
- Do not connect your wallet to a site linked from the token itself
- Do not enter a seed phrase anywhere to “activate” an airdrop
- Do not approve unlimited spending for unknown mints
What to do instead
- Ignore or hide the asset in your wallet UI if you are unsure.
- Research only via official project channels you already know — not links embedded in spam metadata.
- Burn confirmed junk using your wallet’s burn tool so the balance hits zero.
- Close the empty account to reclaim rent (~0.00204 SOL) with your wallet or SolWipe.
Detailed spam steps: Cleaning spam tokens in wallets.
Why airdrops create locked SOL
Receiving a mint creates (or uses) a token account with a rent deposit. Leaving spam sitting there keeps SOL locked even if you never touch the token. Closing empties after burns is how you finish the cleanup.
NFT spam
Unwanted NFTs follow a similar pattern: do not click mystery claim sites; burn or transfer out if your wallet supports it; then close resulting empty accounts when balances are gone.
Keep a light routine
After busy ecosystem events, run a short hygiene pass: hide/burn junk → close empties → verify SOL. Pair with post–meme-coin cleanup if you also trade heavily.
Unwanted airdrops are a network reality. Your response can stay boring and safe — and still recover the rent deposits they leave behind.
